Getting a Grip A Computational Model of the Acquisition of Verb Semantics for Hand Actions

چکیده

We present a computational model of how verbs might be learned within the limited domain of hand actions We hypothesize that such verbs refer to the activities of underlying motor schemas and leverage this constraint to build a system with strong enough biases that it can learn from a reasonably small number of examples while still having adequate exibility to learn the hand action verbs of any language The completed system should demon strate its knowledge both by labelling its own behavior and by carrying out verbal commands in a simulated world

L1 Transfer in L2 Acquisition of the There-Insertion Construction by Mandarin EFL Learners

This study examined the role of the native language (L1) transfer in a non-native language (L2) acquisition of the there-insertion construction at the syntax-semantics interface. Specifically, the study investigated if Mandarin EFL learners would make overgeneralization errors in the situation where an L1 argument structure constitutes a superset of its L2 counterpart. Verbs of existence and ap...

Task-Specific Artifacts of Parametric Properties in English as a Second Language Acquired by Persian-Speaking Learners

This experimental study investigated the learners’ integrative acquisition of obligatory overt subjects and subject-verb clause agreement in English as an L2. In L1 acquisition research, correlations between superficially unrelated linguistic phenomena are analyzed in terms of integrative effects. For instance, in English L1 acquisition, there is evidence for an integrative appearance of subjec...

Perceptual Theory of Mind: An intermediary between visual salience and Noun / Verb Acquisition

We present computational models based on visual attention that learn object-name mappings and action semantics from simple 2D multi-agent visual streams co-occurring with word-separated utterance streams. We use no perceptual priors and the nominals are acquired by an early learner who has no syntactic knowledge. A late learner then uses the knowledge of nominals to identify actions referring t...
